We operate 8 community centers and Camp Moody along with 6 early childhood education centers, 60 afterschool programs on school campuses in four districts, and 20 summer camps, with 1500 staff team members, 1000 volunteers, and a $47M annual operating budget.

Position Summary: We're looking for enthusiastic, creative, and caring Afterschool Counselors to inspire a love of learning in young minds and build memorable experiences at our afterschool programs this Fall and beyond! If you have an open afternoon schedule, would like to work up to 20 hours per week, and have weekends off, this is the perfect job for you.

Afterschool Counselors lead various activities that aim to give children a well-rounded experience. This includes physical activities, social-emotional learning, and much more! You will supervise a group of students at one of our Elementary school campuses in Austin and the surrounding areas. Afterschool programs are Monday through Friday between the hours of 2:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide care for a group of youth ages 4-10 years, such as initiating schedules, routines, and activities during after-school hours.

  • Lead a group of up to 17 young learners.

  • Responsible for the safety of the children on site within the Texas Childcare directives.

  • Ensure youth are learning positive behaviors and providing guidance.
    Leading and supervising play activities, games, sports, and creative projects in the arts, sciences, and math.

  • Follow Curriculum lesson plans put in place which include educational and recreational activities for children in a group setting.

  • Guiding youth through their school assignments, offering help if needed.

  • Distribute snacks following sanitation, USDA, and CCR guidelines.

  • Enforce safety and security standards for children and visitors.

  • Promote the YMCA's character values, mission, wellness philosophy, and role in the community.
    Lead by example the Y’s mission, vision, and values with program participants, members, staff, and guests. 

  • Become an Ambassador of the Y’s work and culture by being the ultimate storyteller of who we are as an organization and brand. 

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18 years.

  • Related education and/or experience in childhood development is a plus.
    Prior experience working with young children preferred.

Pay Range
$18.00 an hour
