Position Title: Teaching Artist

Position Summary:

This position includes a pathway to leadership in the OST Department, through learning more about site management and logistics.

Organizational Description: Creative Action is a nationally-recognized youth arts education organization in Austin, Texas. As the largest provider of creative learning programs in Central Texas, we use the arts as a medium to inspire creativity, unlock potential, and transform the lives of students of all ages. Through interactive classroom performances, after school residencies, and community-based programs, our team of professional teaching artists inspire youth to be creative artists, courageous allies, critical thinkers and confident leaders in their communities.


Key Responsibilities
A Teaching Artist is an integral member of the Out of School Time (OST) site based team. This person works closely with a campus Site Coordinator and Artistic Associate to provide daily enrichment, snacks and class for a cohort of students. Grade levels of students range from PK4 through high school, however, grades are predominantly elementary. This person is responsible for preparing daily lessons. Additional responsibilities include creating unit plans, following Creative Action teaching pedagogy, classroom management, supply maintenance and ordering, and safety for their assigned class(es).

Regular duties occur from 2:30pm-6pm Monday-Friday when school is in session. This position includes the potential for additional hours of work for Day, Spring Break and Summer work as well.
Creative Action Trainings are regularly on Friday mornings 10am-1pm. Meeting training hours is a requirement of the position.

Responsibilities:
Maintain consistent and timely communication with CA staff and other program staff for your campus and follow all required staff sign in/out procedures when on campus as well as maintain any required paperwork on site.
Provide a safe and supportive environment for young people, following the minimum standards and Creative Action’s expectations
Attend all required training/meetings throughout the year, including Creative Action training, arts cohort training, online DFPS training, and any training/orientation for your campus program as scheduled
Support Creative Action’s Out of School Time events as scheduled
Support assessment and evaluation efforts for OST programs
Maintain a consistent and regular attendance record in order to foster relationships, ensure continuity and progress for students, and support afterschool goals and teammates
Fulfill other duties that are related to the role in supporting students and the afterschool community
Maintain HHS state licensing certification requirements, mandatory training, and minimum required annual training hours
Transportation essential–travel expected to and from the program site

Qualifications and Skills:

Participate in Creative Action’s social justice efforts toward anti-racism and inclusive practices.
Must be able to pass all required background checks and fingerprinting for HHS state licensing and Austin Independent School District or other applicable school districts.
Constantly move and position oneself to facilitate class and supervise students.
Constantly move to accomplish after school tasks from one area of the school to another (for example, transitioning students from the classroom to the outdoor playground, supervising students in the cafeteria during snack time, etc).
Daily exposure to outdoor elements pending inclement weather.
Can include ascending/descending stairs and ramps.
Constantly communicate with young people. Constant verbal communication such as providing verbal reminders and communicating instructions and expectations. Regular use of visuals and written communication with agenda boards and lessons.
Occasionally move and position oneself to ensure student safety in time sensitive situations including but not limited to student injuries, fire drills, and other urgent situations.
Willing to obtain required CPR & First-aid certification prior to start date (paid for by Creative Action).
High school diploma or its equivalent.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary: Starting at $20 an hour
