4H Capital-Garden Science Afterschool Instructor

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps Garden Science Afterschool Instructor will be part of a team helping teach a holistic urban farm model alongside our Animal Science team. Members of the Garden Science team will teach elementary students about planting, maintaining, and harvesting gardens, composting, and healthy eating.

Responsibilities: Essential Functions:
Prep lesson plans and activities for elementary students in afterschool clubs
Lead groups of up to 16 students in hands-on science activities
Build students’ garden, cooking, and animal science skills
Assist with building and maintaining garden beds at partner schools. Responsible for seeds/transplants/trees that will be planted and grown throughout the program year.
Inspire youth to develop into inquiring scientists, citizens of character, partners in service and engaged community members
Be a positive role model and influence for elementary and middle school aged students
Members will be working specifically with vulnerable populations.
Plan, lead, and assist 4-H CAPITAL’s science curriculum in the afterschool space
Develop proficiency in teaching and leading groups of youth of up to 16 students
Implement proactive behavior management systems to ensure a safe and impactful teaching environment
Members will work a 9AM-6PM weekly schedule (40 hours per week)
Assist in gathering and reporting data for evaluation purposes including daily attendance
Willingness to work in an office environment that houses animals
Working outdoors in various weather conditions with exposure to stinging insects, poison ivy, and other hazards

Qualifications and Skills: Interest in science, community service, youth development and/or non-profit work
Experience working with you in a professional setting
Positive attitude and willingness to learn new things
Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence
Has reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites.
Flexible hours to care for animals during the school year (may work more than 45 hours per week at given times)
Flexible hours to care for gardens during the school year (may work more than 45 hours per week at given times)
Ability to bend, sit on the floor, stoop and lift teaching materials that may weigh up to 50 lbs
U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
High school diploma or equivalent
Commitment to serve 6 month term: January 3, 2023 – June 30th 2023
Complete 900 hours of service by June 30th, 2023
Wear the AmeriCorps logo while in service
Disaster Relief: In the event of a local, state, or federal disaster declaration, AmeriCorps members may be asked on a volunteer basis or be required by OneStar to activate to assist in disaster response and recovery activities within their communities. This may involve virtual service opportunities or in-person service opportunities. This may include service opportunities outside of the member’s standard service hours or in place of their standard service duties. In the event of a large-scale, high needs local, state, or federal disaster, AmeriCorps members may voluntarily or be required by OneStar to deploy to an area outside of their service area to assist in disaster response and recovery activities.
